Alpha Lambda Delta: Students Helping Each Other and Their Community

Alpha Lambda Delta, a premier freshman honor society, is coming full force this year with more project ideas and community service than ever before.

ALD's 2009-2010 president, Joel Williamson had nothing but positive things to say about the A&T chapter's initiative to inform the students about the society and what they have to offer.

Williamson on what ALD really is: "ALD is a bridge, its a door, and if you open it you get to realize that this school is really run by a lot of students. A lot of the stuff that goes on is us, its crazy."

What does ALD mean to you?
I've always wanted to be a part of an organization where I could give to the community, and also have a say in what goes on in my school and in the community. ALD is that and more.

The premise is you have to have a 3.5 GPA in your first semester or second semester of freshman year and you have to maintain A's and B's. Its not just grade-wise, its also person-wise. People who join would also have to be the type of people that like to give back like tutors, academic success coaches.

It means that I've got my grades together but I'm not too heavy on myself and I don't put myself on a pedestal so I don't mind helping you, showing you how I did what I did.

Do you feel ALD has enough exposure on campus?
No ma'am. Not at all. And I think we could but ALD is caught in the transition phase from freshman year to sophomore year and it comes along with so many other responsibilities that you have to do so sometimes people tend to shy away from it. We don't want to be understated.

How will ALD bring about change on A&T's campus?
I think as long as we continue to push scholastics, as long as we continue to go and partner with other organizations to bring programs and community service we will continue to change this campus. We're going to have a meeting on Tuesday where we're forming committees and doing projects.

How do ALD members differ from regular honors students?
Plain and simple, the only difference is that I have an opportunity and I'm taking it. What I mean by that is we have someone to say 'we are with' and have an association so that we can do what we do. It makes it a lot easier.

Describe ALD in three words.
Humble, team, and innovators. We have ideas and we like to team up with other people and we're humble because we're not afraid to admit when we're wrong and say 'I'm sorry'.

Is there anything you want A&T students to know about ALD that has not already been mentioned?
Basically what I want to say is this. Students are always saying 'I want to change this, I want to change that.' Well this is the width to change it. This is that little extra that gives you the right to go in and change something.

ALD is a bridge, its a door, and if you open it you get to realize that this school is really run by a lot of students. A lot of the stuff that goes on is us, its crazy. I didn't know all this came with ALD.
